Motivation
We have been tormented by puns for way too long. Action must be taken! I hereby bring to life a Fine Jar for puns.
These rules come into effect from 10/06/2013 onwards.
What is a pun?
A joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings.
Both oral and written puns will be considered.
No distinction is drawn between intentional and unintentional puns.
Pun Jar fines system
- Every pun incurs a 25c fine
- Every second pun for a working day incurs an additional 50c fine
- Every subsequent pun for the working day incurs an additional $1 fine
E.g. If Vaiju comes up with 3 puns on the first Tuesday of a calendar month, she incurs a $2.25 fine.
- Every 5 puns per working week incurs an additional $1 fine
E.g. If Gavin's pun offending rate is as follows:-
04/06 (Tue): 2 puns
05/06 (Wed): 1 pun
06/06 (Thu): 3 puns
07/06 (Fri): 1 pun
The fine he incurs is $4.75
- Every 10 puns per calendar month incurs an additional $2 fine
Monday Pun-day
Monday is a free-for-all day i.e. no fines will be incurred for puns on Monday. If Monday is a public holiday then the pun-day is not transferred on to the next working day.
Annual Reading of Puns Lunch
Once a year the fines collected will be used to fund a lunch (as far as possible). During this lunch there will be a reading of the top 10 best and worst puns. Rules for the lunch are as follows:-
- The highest contributor (in monetary terms) gets to choose the venue for the lunch.
- $20 (from the pun fines) will be reserved for the highest contributor. The rest of the funds (up to a maximum of $20 per person) will be divided equally among the remaining invitees and be used for their lunch
- To be invited to the Annual Reading of Puns Lunch a minimum contribution of $5 (to be collected through pun fines) is required
How to report a pun?
- At least 2 people need to have witnessed the pun
- The pun needs to be reported to the Pun Sergeant (BT for now) via email on the day the pun was said to have been used. The following details need to be included in the email:-
- Details of the pun
- Name of the offender
- Names of the witnesses
- Date, time and place of offence
Incorrect reporting of puns could result in the pun not being recorded.
